Join us for an evening with Bob Burtt, reporter and editor for more than 40 years, including a 24 year stint at the Waterloo Region Record where he focused on environmental stories. Burtt will be in conversation with Susan Bryant, discussing his new book, Water Our Sacred Trust: a story about Waterloo Region's most important resource and the challenges it faces.
About Bob Burtt
Bob has authored and published three books. No Guardians At The Gate, a story about the Elmira Water Crisis, was published in 2014. It was followed by Rare Moments in Time in 2018 and Water Our Sacred Trust: a story about Waterloo Region's most important resource and the challenges it faces in 2022. During his time at The Record, Burtt had a front row seat during some trying times for the region. He wrote about problems with supply and contamination, the fight over plans to have a pipeline from Lake Erie constructed, and others about the region's role as an innovator.
Burtt has been retired for sixteen years and lives in Cambridge with his wife Sheila. When he isn't writing he enjoys gardening, woodwork and golf.
About Susan Bryant
In 1989, Susan became an environmental activist when the municipal water wells in Elmira were closed because of contamination from the Uniroyal chemical plant. She was a founding member of APT Environment, an Elmira citizens’ group which continues, 30-some years later, to monitor the remediation and to advocate for a proper clean-up. APT is currently focused on the creek flowing into the Grand River, which remains contaminated with DDT and dioxins from the historic production DDT and Agent Orange at Uniroyal.
Meeting Bob Burtt was one of the happier aspects of 1989 for Susan. At the time, Bob was covering the Elmira water crisis as environmental reporter for The Record. They talked often. Since then, Bob and Susan have worked together on water-related projects and become friends. They share an ongoing interest in water issues, especially in the Region of Waterloo.
