Just because we can’t travel to far off places doesn’t mean we can’t do some exploring through our kitchens. A World in My Kitchen offers you the opportunity to learn about other cultures through well-loved dishes. You’ll get a recipe and, when possible, suggestions as to where to find ingredients, restaurants, cookbooks, and other resources.
Located in the Middle East, Syria is one of the world’s oldest civilizations. Within the Fertile Crescent, it was part of the First Agricultural revolution and later hosted trading spots on the Silk Road. Over the centuries, it’s been governed by Persians, Greeks, Romans, Umayyads, Ottomans, and French, all of whom have shaped its flavours and foods. Join us to learn about Syrian cuisine and its pantry as we walk through a delicious dish you can make at home.
A World in My Kitchen is presented by Jasmine Mangalaseril, a Kitchener-based food writer. Her work covers a range of topics including profiles, food history, and foodways. She’s a restaurant reviewer for the Waterloo Region Record and her World of Food column for Grand Magazine tells the stories of people who’ve come to Waterloo Region and the foods that remind them of home. You can find her on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter as @cardamomaddict.
Registrants will receive an e-mail 24 hours before the start of the program with an invitation to join.
